From a job in Naples

The fake hawk didn't scare them

A Naples homeowner tried a fake hawk decoy to keep woodpeckers off the house. The woodpeckers pecked a hole right through it.

Plastic hawks and owls don't work long-term. In my experience, woodpeckers get used to a decoy that just sits there, and they go right back to drilling next to it. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also says owl and hawk models have inconsistent success (USFWS (opens in a new tab)).

What about woodpecker repellent paint?

In my experience, it doesn't work. What does work is repairing the holes and installing visual deterrents.

Why repair matters

An open hole doesn't stay empty

  • Water gets in. An open hole in foam trim lets rain into the molding.
  • Other birds move in. Starlings and other birds nest in the holes woodpeckers leave behind.

That's why I repair every hole, not just the newest one, and then put up visual deterrents so the woodpeckers don't start again.

Woodpeckers are protected

Woodpeckers, their nests and their eggs are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (USFWS (opens in a new tab)). If a nest is active, leave it alone. The work waits until the young have left, which is usually by midsummer (USFWS (opens in a new tab)). I never trap or kill woodpeckers, and I never use poison.

How it works

Three steps to solid trim

  1. Step 1

    Text the address and photos

Text your property address and a few photos of the holes to (239) 946-RATS. I'll send you a free quote.

  2. Step 2

    Repair the holes

Each hole is repaired with exterior-grade materials and left paint-ready, so the trim can be painted to match.

  3. Step 3

    Install visual deterrents

Visual deterrents go up to keep woodpeckers from coming back to drill.

Woodpecker damage FAQ

Do fake owls or hawk decoys keep woodpeckers away?

Not for long. In my experience, woodpeckers get used to a decoy that just sits there and go right back to drilling. One Naples homeowner tried a fake hawk, and the woodpeckers pecked a hole right through it.

Does woodpecker repellent paint work?

In my experience, no. I repair the holes and install visual deterrents instead.

Can you just remove the woodpeckers?

No. Woodpeckers, their nests and their eggs are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. I repair the damage and install visual deterrents. If there's an active nest, the work waits until the young have left.

Why repair the holes if the woodpeckers have moved on?

Open holes in foam trim let water in, and starlings and other birds move into them. A repaired hole is one less way in.
